    Good employee relations involves providing fair and consistent treatment to all employees in order to:

    AU Employee relations Unit is:

    1. Ensuring the compliance to the SRR.
    2. Ensuring communication and Employee welfare.
    3. Establishing rules, policies, procedures and code of conduct.
    4. Handling grievances and grievance resolution.
    5. Dealing with Employees complaint and Disciplinary matters.
  • Pension, Insurance, Staff Welfare and Benefits Unit
    1. Installation allowances is paid to international staff joining the Union
    2. Education allowances: AU provides education allowances to its Regular staff members
    3. AU covers the medical cares of its regular and fix-term staff. A medical plan has been designed for the regular staff while the fixed-term staff are covered under a medical insurance.
    4. All international staff benefit for home leave entitlement every two years from assumption of duty. The regular staff members and their dependents will benefit for a return ticket while the only the fixed-term staff will benefit from the same.
    5. AU pays spouse allowances and children allowances to its regular staff members.
    6. A pension scheme exists and is mandatory for all regular staff members during their stay at the Union.
    7. The AU covers fixed-term and regular staff members under a group life scheme – In case a staff passes away during his stay at the Union a compensation equal to 4 times the annual gross salary is paid to the designated beneficiary of the staff.
    8. A regular staff can benefit for a car loan free of interest during his stay in the Union.
  • Staff Compensation and Benefits
    1. Supplementary compensation:

      The African Union offers attractive benefits to its employees over and above the salary which increase their wealth or wellbeing and may include some cost to the employer. Most benefits are regulated by the organizational staff regulations and rules of the Organization based on the contract type. As an employer of choice, the African Union offers a competitive package that includes the following benefits which are reviewed from time to time as required to ensure that competitiveness with other similar organizations in the market: NB: depending on the contract type.

      Health and Life Insurance:

       “The African Union is a caring organization”. It cares for its employees as well as for the dependents and believes that a healthy employee contributes positively towards an organization meeting its goals and objectives. As a result, all staff members are covered for health and life Insurance. Staff members with regular contracts are covered under the AU medical Plan while fixed-term and short-term staff are covered by Cigna. Both medical plans reimburse staff member 80% on their medical expenses for out-patient services and 100% for inpatient medical expenses.

      Travel and Removal expenses

      To ensure a smooth travel for the staff member and eligible dependents, the AU covers for the travel costs depending on their contract types as follows:

      • The Union pays for travel costs of staff members and their eligible family members travelling on initial appointment from place of residence to the duty station, however this is not applicable to fixed and short-term dependents.
      • The Union pays for travel expenses of staff members travelling on official mission,
      • The Union pays for travel costs of eligible staff members and family members travelling on home leave; change of duty station; separation from the service; medical evacuation and other travels as may be authorized under the Rules.

      Travel and Transportation Of Personal Effects

      “Moving staff from their place of residence to their duty station in a dignified manner”

      • Staff members on regular contract shall be entitled to the transportation of their household goods and personal effects at the rate of four thousand kilograms (4,000 Kg) in sea freight or One thousand three hundred and thirty-four kilograms (1334 Kg) in air freight.
      • Internationally Recruited Staff members on short-term contracts or fixed term contracts shall be entitled to an air ticket and one hundred kilograms (100 kg) in addition to their air travel luggage entitlement.

      Installation Allowance

      To ensure a smooth transition and to support to the staff member and his/her dependents on the relocation costs, the African Union pays installation allowance to the staff members and eligible dependents as follows:

      • 100% X Daily Subsistence Allowance (DSA) at the applicable rate of the duty station
      • Eligible spouse: 50% of the staff members installation allowance
      • Eligible child who is 12 years old: 100% of the staff member installation allowance
      • Eligible children under 12 years old and up to 2 years: 50% of staff members Installation allowance
      • No installation allowance for infants less than 2 years old.

      NB: Installation allowance is not applicable for dependent of staff members holding fixed and short-term contracts.

      Duty Free Privileges

      As a means to support staff in purchasing items at reasonable prices, within one-year of service of employment, all internationally recruited staff are permitted to purchase duty-free items either in Ethiopia or importing them from abroad and exempted from paying tax.

      Leave

      The AUC promotes work-life balance by providing leave to staff to rest and recuperate. The leave is categorized as per the information below:

      Annual leave: 28 days per annum with an additional 2 days to cater for travel for International staff.

      Maternity Leave: The Organization cares and supports expecting mothers on continuing regular or regular appointment, including the probationary period, by giving them ninety-eight (98) calendar days of maternity leave, on full pay upon presentation of a medical certificate. This is to ensure full recovery and promote bonding time between the mother and the baby.

      Female staff member on short-term contract and project staff are entitled to paid maternity leave in the following manner:

      - For staff with up to six (6) months contract or service Four (4) weeks

      - For staff with up to one (1) year contract or service Six (6) weeks

      - For staff with more than one (1) year contract or service Ten (10) weeks

       A breast-feeding staff member shall be allowed up to one (1) hour free time per day to nurse her baby for up to a period of one (1) year.

      Paternity Leave: On the occasion of the confinement of eligible spouse, a male staff member is entitled to five (5) working days of leave with pay excluding travel days.

      Sick Leave: A staff member who is unable to perform his or her duties as a result of illness or injury shall be granted sick leave:

      A staff member on regular or continuing regular contract, whether confirmed or not, may be granted sick leave of up to three (3) months on full pay, and three (3) months on half pay in any period of twelve (12) consecutive months.

      Sick Leave for staff members on short-term contract, project staff and consultant shall be earned at the rate of four (4) working days per month. Such sick leave shall not be accrued or converted into annual leave or converted into cash payment.

      Home Leave: The Union shall pay for travel costs of eligible staff members and family members travelling on home leave;

      Study Leave: A regular or continuing regular staff member may be granted study leave up to a maximum of six (6) months that can only be granted once in every five (5) years of qualifying service to enable him or her to undertake a course of study in the interest of the Union or to sit for an academic examination.

      Leave without pay: To attend to staff needs and to exercise some level of flexibility, where a regular or continuing regular staff member is authorized at his or her request to take a training course without pay, the staff member shall be required to first exhaust his or her annual leave entitlement and thereafter shall not be entitled to salary or allowances for the duration of the study leave requested.

      Educational allowance: To contribute to children’s quality education, the AU offers educational allowance of:

      Up to $10,000 per child per annum for International regular staff and up to $3,300.00 per child per annum for national regular professional or locally recruited regular staff. This is to cushion staff to ensure that their dependents receive quality education.

      For staff members whose duty station in in Europe or North America the entitlements shall be:

      Up to $15,000.00 per eligible child per annum for International recruited staff and up to $5, 000.00 per eligible child per year for national and locally recruited staff.

      Spouse Allowance: For regular staff, the AU offers some allowance of 5% of basic salary of the staff member to cushion spouses’ financial capacity on the condition that the eligible spouse is not receiving remuneration exceeding $500.00 per month.

      Gym Membership: To promote staff wellness and fitness, staff members are also encouraged to join the AU gymnasium. This also contributes positively to stress management.

      AU Credit Union: In order to promote the culture of savings and good financial management skills, staff members are encouraged to join the AU credit union.

    Through an array of opportunities ranging from young professional programs, fellowships, volunteer service, internships, mentorships, trainings and the like; the AU offers broad range of tangible opportunities for Young professionals to be engaged across the AUC and contribute to talent retention and Leadership succession planning across the Commission.

    This further contributes to the AU Assembly Decision 687(XXX) to ensure that AU workforce is 35% youth by 2025 and Agenda 2063 – Aspiration 6: of “An Africa whose development is people-driven, relying on the potential of African people, especially its women and youth, and caring for children” *

    No. Being an Organization of sovereign states, its resources are allocated only to programmes which have been officially approved by its members. However, there are several ways Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) can collaborate with the AU on its activities.
